Abstract
It is well accepted concept that patients with cancer show the cellular immune
difficiency that can be recovered or potenciated by biological response modifiers such as
gamma-interferon, interleukine 2 and many of thymic hormonal polypeptides.
We evaluated the balst transformation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained
from patients with cancer before and after 8 §· single dose of Thymomodulin
administration. Thymomodulin, one of calf thymus extracts, can raise significantly the
spontaneous blast transformation without mitogenic stimulation as well as the uptake of
H3-thymidine with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and poke-weed mitogen
(PWM) stimulation. The exact dosage of Thymomodulin is uncertain, but its action is
sustained for 48 hours, so the booster should be recommended in order to maintain
those of increased blast transformation.
Our data give us a postulation of the multicenters' clinical trials to evaluate the
efficacy of this biologcal responss modifier which can potenciate T cell function as well
as T cell dependent B cell function.
